Decadal and Long?Term Variability of Sea Level in the Southwestern Pacific During 1948–2018

چکیده

Decadal and long-term variability of sea level in the Southwestern Pacific (SWP) was investigated by using tide gauge measurements obtained near New Zealand during 1948–2018 a 1.5-layer reduced gravity model. After removal global mean level, there still exists prominent positive trend strong decadal oscillations SWP which are attributed to Southern Annular Mode (SAM) Interdecadal Oscillation (IPO), respectively. On time scale, intensification local wind stress curl associated with strengthening SAM contributes rise (SLR) through Ekman convergence. locally generated westward propagating signals induced IPO exert comparable influences on variations SWP. Results from multivariable linear regression suggest that can account for almost all SLR, explains approximately 58% variability.

Pacific decadal oscillation and sea level in the Japan/East sea

Satellite altimetric data from September 1992 to January 2002 and hydrographic data from 1927 to 1999 reveal the presence of low-frequency variability of sea surface height (SSH) within the Japan/East Sea (JES). SSH interannual variability amounting to approximately 15 cm is in phase with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), with higher SSH, warmer, fresher surface (upper 200 dbar) layer duri...

Extratropical Air-Sea Interaction, Sea Surface Temperature Variability, and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation

We examine processes that influence North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies including surface heat fluxes, upper ocean mixing, thermocline variability, ocean currents, and tropical-extratropical interactions via the atmosphere and ocean. The ocean integrates rapidly varying atmospheric heat flux and wind forcing, and thus a stochastic model of the climate system, where white noise...

Origins of the midlatitude Pacific decadal variability

Analysis of multiple climate simulations shows much of the midlatitude Pacific decadal variability to be composed of two simultaneously occurring elements: One is a stochastically driven, passive ocean response to the atmosphere while the other is oscillatory and represents a coupled mode of the ocean-atmosphere system. ENSO processes are not required to explain the origins of the decadal varia...

Robustness of the modes of Indo‐Pacific sea level variability

Reliable projections of future sea level are vital for coastal communities. Regional deviations from global mean sea level rise are caused primarily by spatial patterns in the various components of sea level change (e.g. melting land ice, thermal expansion, and so on; see Slangen et al. 2012; Perrette et al. 2013; Church et al. 2013) and by wind anomalies associated for example with various cli...
